Verona vs Napoli Prediction: 18/8/2024

Since their return to Serie A in 2019, Hellas Verona has consistently found themselves in the fight to avoid relegation. Last season, the Gialloblu finished in 13th place, narrowly avoiding the drop by just three points.

At one point, they were in the relegation zone, but two crucial victories in their final four matches ensured their survival in Italy’s top flight. This season, Verona is again expected to be battling near the bottom of the table, and they will need to work hard to secure their place in Serie A for another year.

On the other hand, Napoli, who hadn’t claimed the Scudetto since the days of Maradona in 1990, finally ended their long title drought by winning the league in 2023. However, maintaining that success proved challenging, and the club endured a disappointing season that followed.

Frequent coaching changes disrupted their campaign, and they quickly dropped out of the title race, finishing a disappointing 10th in Serie A, meaning they missed out on European competition for this year. Now, under the leadership of Antonio Conte, Napoli hopes to bounce back and aim for a Champions League spot.

Hellas Verona has seen some notable departures, including the influential winger Noslin, who scored five goals last season, and striker Thomas Henry, who has joined Palermo. Last season’s loanees Folorunsho (Napoli) and Bonazzoli (Salernitana) have also returned to their parent clubs.

However, Verona has strengthened their squad with the signings of piston Tchatchoua (from Charleroi), midfielder Serdar (Hertha Berlin), defenders Frese (Nordsjaelland) and Corradi (Vicenza), midfielder Harroui (Frosinone), and forward Mosquera (America).

Promising young attacking midfielder Suslov is expected to take on a more significant role, with veterans like Dawidowicz, Magnani, goalkeeper Montipo, and midfielder Duda providing experience and leadership.

Napoli, meanwhile, lost their key playmaker Zielinski, who joined Inter on a free transfer. To reinforce their squad, they have added defenders Buongiorno (Torino) and Marin (Real Madrid), along with seasoned left-back Spinazzola (Roma).

Napoli’s standout players remain attackers Kvaratskhelia, who contributed 11 goals and 6 assists last season, and Osimhen, who scored 15 goals. While Kvaratskhelia may stay with the club, Osimhen has expressed a desire to leave.

Prediction

Verona’s last six Serie A games have all featured under 3.5 goals, with only eight goals scored across those matches. Similarly, eight of Napoli’s nine league games this season have also seen three goals or fewer. Given these trends, a low-scoring match seems likely.

Prediction: Verona 1 : 1 Napoli
